Curious about Self-Discovery? How Creating your Own Website can Jump Start the Process

While creating my own website, with no previous knowledge about web design, layouts, fonts and all the bells and whistles it comes with, I uncovered this hidden gem of a tool. Right off the get go, it became apparent that all my strengths, weaknesses, traits and talents wanted to join the design party. I wasn’t quite prepared for such an involved process - actually, I really only wanted to blog but in order to do so I needed to create this platform first. Sigh.

After choosing my web provider I dove into the “template abyss” of beautifully crafted websites that could host my new blog. The revelations began to unravel rather quickly… (I’ve highlighted all 12 of them in bold).

The Feeling of being Overwhelmed by too many Choices showed up right away. This has been a constant in my life and I quickly realized in order to move forward I needed to narrow it down to one or two choices and get started on the design part of it all.

Hah, little did I know that Getting Swayed by the template’s beautiful design, words, fonts and layouts got me sidetracked from my original vision and I went down the rabbit hole of creating something that didn’t feel authentic. So, I had to start all over again.

Luckily, I’m a Fast Learner and due to the first round of practice all of it felt much easier and went smoother. Especially with paying special attention to the choices that I made along the way. Picking through the colors, fonts, pictures and all the options of navigating ones website felt much more intuitive this time around and the building part was actually starting to be fun.

I discovered that I had an Eye for Design and a Knack for Putting it all Together. As mentioned, I’ve never built a website before so I surprised myself with this bonus talent. Another gem in my toolbox!

My Perfectionism made its grand entrance while picking the background picture that shows up on all my pages! Uff, that was rough going there for a while. I battled with the question of how one image can truly reflect who I am and what I stand for. Overthinking this aspect would only get me stuck in analysis paralysis so I actually went with one of my trusted main traits of Intuitive Feeling and chose this stunning flower sprinkled with water droplets.

The most Frustration was caused by writing the content for my Home and About Page. Having to put into words “What my site is About” as well as coming up with a short and curated version of “Who I Am” has caused me some moments of hair pulling, sighing, grunting and cursing. This happens often to me in the writing process. The sentences are so expressively laid out in my head but when I want to transfer that to the page it reveals itself as something completely different! It’s kind of like the vision in my head loses some of the magic when it enters the reality of the page! Indeed, very frustrating.

Wrapping up my web design journey has been a profound experience. I’m proud of having had the Patience and Determination to go through the process and be able to share this part of my life with the world. My last revelation has been that all the design choices I made subconsciously are a true reflection of my values of Simplicity, Honesty and Integrity.

Maybe some of you feel inspired to design your own unique website now, either as a creative outlet or just for fun. It definitely can serve as a microcosm of your personality and show you who you are in your ever day life! As the saying goes "How you do one thing, is how you do everything."

Let me know what you discover!
