5 Reasons Why it’s Time to Give Simplicity a Try
Have you ever wondered about the hype surrounding Simplicity and why so many people adopt it as a lifestyle? Yes, yes. Marie Kondo, Minimalism and Essentialism are the more common buzzwords nowadays but they all share a core value: the pursuit of less. Moving away from consumerism and materialism to embracing a life filled with meaning and the things that YOU value the most.
“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” — Hans Hofmann
Once we start to simplify our lives, we notice what is truly important. And ironically, it usually only involves a small percentage of material possessions. The Pareto Principle, better known as the 80/20 rule, when applied to minimalism, asks you to question which 20% of the things you own and spend your time on bring you 80% of joy and satisfaction. This principle alone paves the way to a more meaningful life!
The process of paring down, sorting out, letting go and simplifying is very powerful and sheds a light into what’s hidden underneath all your accumulations. Once you catch glimpses of the other side, your curiosity will get the best of you and will spread to other areas of your life. All of a sudden, you apply simplicity to everything you do and notice that you move through your day with much more ease and lightheartedness.
Although there are plenty of “How to’s”, remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to simplifying one's life.
It is a wildly individual path to decide what brings value and meaning to YOU. Sometimes you won’t even know for yourself until you get in the thick of it.
Nevertheless, the benefits are universal. Adopting a life of simplicity will:
1. Free Up your Time
Simplicity creates time and space for the things you really want to do. All of a sudden you don’t feel ruled by your belongings and the maintenance they require. A simple home in combination with integrated routines and structures leaves you time leftover for whatever truly lights you up.
2. Enhance your Finances
Well, this one is a no-brainer. The less you buy, the less you spend, hence more money in your pocket or savings account. So why would you add more stuff after all this hard work of simplifying your home and life? No more rinse and repeat.
Instead, what about spending the extra money on experiences, on healthy food, preventative methods to keep you well and fit, or invest and save it to keep you financially independent and wealthy in the long run? What about retirement or joining the FIRE movement (Financial Independence Retire Early) in order to stop working in your 30s or 40s? How cool would that be?!
3. Boost your Mental Clarity
Ever notice how a calm, organized and visually uncluttered space instantly puts you in a relaxed mood? Add some soft music and a lit candle and voila, your very own spa experience. Nothing beats an environment that promotes a sense of grounding and clarity of thought. Just for that reason alone it’s worth simplifying your living space. For Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) this is a must! I dedicated an entire blog post to this notion.
4. Optimize your Habits and Behaviors
I’m referring to the things we do each day without thinking too deeply about them. The actions we repeat on autopilot. Some of our habits enhance our health and well-being while others clearly do not.
Being able to catch ourselves when we switch into unhealthy behaviors is oftentimes the challenge in itself. Especially when we feel worn out, overwhelmed, overworked and just plain tired. Yes, I’m talking about binge watching shows, emotional eating, shop therapy and anything that we do in excess to escape reality for a little while.
Simplicity helps cultivate the awareness to first see these habits for what they are so you can distinguish if this behavior supports your well-being in the long run. It can help spring you into action to make some positive changes all around.
5. Unleash your Intuition
The quieter and calmer your mind becomes, the more you will be able to access your own intuition.
We all know this little voice or the nudges we get when we said YES to something instead with sticking with the NO that we feel deep inside.
Oftentimes our voice of intuition is buried so deep that we can no longer hear it and after a while we become unhappy, depressed and sometimes even physically sick. We don’t honor our own voice – instead, we consistently override it with what society demands of us. The more you remove the excess from your life (and I mean literally in all aspects of life, from sorting the belongings in your home, to looking at friendships, relationships, finances, career, your e-mail inbox, etc.) the freer you will feel and the more you will be able to live according to your values, your truth and be guided by your little voice of wisdom!
